Policy Benefits

Key features of our policies

All of our Carpenter and Joiner Insurance policies provide cover for:

Public Liability
This forms the core of all of our Business Insurance policies. It can protect you against the potential costs associated when dealing with an injury claim by a member of the public and against property damage claims as a result of your business activities.

Public Liability Insurance for Carpenters and Joiners can cover the legal defence costs for alleged negligence and pay compensation where your business is found to be at fault.

Policy limits of £1 million, £2 million & £5 million, with £10 million available for certain trades.

Optional features

Employers Liability
You are required by law to have Employers’ Liability Insurance for people you have under a contract of service with you; either as manual labour, clerical work or otherwise. Limited companies also require Employers Liability Insurance under this law. You could face fines of up to £2500 per day if you do not have an Employers Liability Certificate.

Tools - (handheld e.g. power drills)
Most people know tradesmen who have had their tools stolen. Our policies can cover you against theft or damage to your portable handheld tools and their accessories.

Plant - (Larger than handheld e.g. fixed bench saw)

Your own plant, or plant which you have hired for work on a contract, can be insured against theft or malicious damage.

Contract works - (The actual work being carried out and related materials)
This covers the contracts you are working on including materials eg. If you are half way through building an extension on a property and an insured peril occurs, such as a fire, flood or malicious damage and this destroys some or all of the extension, then Contract Works Cover will pay to put you back in the position you were in before the peril occurred. As with all insurance policies, limits and level of cover will depend upon the package you choose.

Things to look out for - Exclusions and tips

To make sure that you get the most from your Public Liability Insurance for Carpenters and Joiners, you need to make sure that you bear these things in mind when choosing your policy and running your business:

Public Liability excesses
Given that the work covered by a Carpenters Public Liability Insurance may differ, policy excesses will vary according to your activities.

Statutory exemption from Employers Liability cover
If you run a family business in which your employees are closely related to you, you would usually be exempt from Employers Liability unless your business is run as a Limited company

Policy restrictions
Some insurers will restrict cover by applying height or depth limits, or by restricting the use of heat equipment. You may also find with certain Carpenters Insurance Policies that the types of premises you are insured to work upon are restricted.

Theft of tools
You will know that tool theft is an occupational hazard for your profession. Because of this, most insurers have conditions which specify minimum security requirements to reduce the risk. For example, your policy is likely to require that you store your tools out of sight and inside a locked van or building overnight.
