What is Tradesmen Liability Insurance and why do you need
it?
Every time you do your job, there are risks from which you need
to protect yourself and other people. For many tradesmen and
professionals, those risks seem invisible until the very moment
that something goes wrong, but without insurance the costs
of accidents or mistakes can be unbearable.
Tradesmen & Professional Insurance can ensure that should
something go wrong while you’re at work, you and your
equipment can be covered from the unpredictable costs than
can arise.
We pride ourselves on working with businesses with
unique requirements. Whatever your type of business or the
risks involved, it’s likely that YOUR Insurance can help you find
the right policy for your needs.

Key features of our policies
All of our Tradesmen & Professional policies can provide
cover for:
Public Liability
This forms the core of all of our Tradesmen & Professional
packages. It can protect you against injury caused to 3rd parties
and against damage to 3rd party property.
As a business owner and/or employer, you have a legal
responsibility towards employees, customers and the public. You
risk being sued if an employee or a member of the public is injured
due to your negligence or breach of duty. Damages resulting from
these cases can be astronomical, and usually almost impossible to
absorb without insurance.
Public liability insurance is designed to cover legal defence
costs for alleged negligence and to pay compensation should your
business be found to be at fault.
With YOUR Insurance policies, limits of £1m, £2m, £5m and £10m
are available for certain trades.
Optional features
Employers Liability
You can choose cover to protect you in the event of injury to any
employees
Tools
Most people know tradesmen who have had their tools stolen. Our
policies can cover you against theft or damage to your portable
handheld tools.
Plant
Your own plant, or plant which you have hired for work on a
contract, can be insured against theft or malicious damage.
Contract works
This cover protects your building contracts against malicious
damage to structures and equipment or against loss of materials,
during building or alteration. This is also known as Contractors
All Risks insurance.
As with all insurance policies, limits and level of cover will
depend upon the package you choose.
Things to look out for
To make sure that you get the most from your insurance, you need
to make sure that you bear these things in mind when choosing your
policy and running your business:
Public Liability excesses
Given that the work covered by Tradesmen & Professional
Insurance is so varied, policy excesses will vary according to your
trade. You may also find that increased excesses apply to specific
activities, such as paint spraying or working on water heating
systems.
Statutory Exemption from Employers Liability
cover
If you run a family business in which your employees are closely
related to you, you would usually be exempt from Employers
Liability. Examples of close relatives might include your husband,
wife, civil partner, father, mother, grandfather, grandmother,
stepfather, stepmother, son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter,
stepson, stepdaughter, brother, sister, half-brother or
half-sister. However, this exemption does not apply to family
businesses which are incorporated as limited companies.
Policy restrictions
Some insurers will restrict cover by applying height or depth
limits, or by restricting the use of heat equipment. You may also
find with certain policies that the types of premises you are
insured to work upon are restricted.
Manual and Clerical trades
Insurers will often refer to trades as being ‘manual’ or
‘clerical’. Manual trades include the traditional manual
professions such as building, plumbing and carpentry, but also
hairdressing, cleaning, driving or delivery, security and so on.
Clerical trades would typically refer to consultants, advisors and
legal or financial professions.
Theft of tools
You will know that tool theft is an occupational hazard for
tradesmen. Because of this, most insurers have conditions which
specify minimum security requirements to reduce the risk. For
example, your policy is likely to require that you store your tools
out of sight and inside a locked vehicle or building overnight.
