Pub insurance recommendations

Business interruption

We recommend a minimum of 24-36 months worth of business interruption with your pub insurance policy. If your property was destroyed by a fire, it could easily take you this amount of time to get back on your feet and rebuild.

The recovery time of a pub can be greatly extended by two main things:

  • Being in an inner city location, making it difficult to transport building materials to your premises.
  • Operating out of a listed building, adding regulatory issues and requiring harder-to-source building materials. This is a very common issue facing pubs as many of them are over 100 years old and have listed status.

Personal accident and violent assault cover

Alcohol related incidents are an occupational hazard of running a pub and sadly, assault is not uncommon. Many of the policies we can offer will be able to cover you and your clientele for injury or death as the result of personal accidents and violent assault. This cover will pay out £10,000 in the event of a successful claim.

Licence protection

It’s incredibly difficult to run a pub without a licence to sell alcohol, and that licence can be taken away from you by local authorities. The reasons contributing to losing this are not always within your control and can range from disrupting your neighbourhood with noisy guests through to violent crimes taking place in or outside your pub.

Getting that licence back again is also not always straightforward and can cost upwards of £100,000. We can negotiate to include cover for winning back your licence as part of your pub insurance policy and it is a feature that we often highly recommend.

Restaurant owners

If you serve food, your business insurance policy will need to take into consideration the risks associated with its cooking and preparation.

Different varieties of food from basic sandwich preparation through to deep fat frying will have different requirements from an insurance point of view so it is important to tailor your policy adequately with the right features on top of your basic public liability insurance and employers' liability insurance elements.

Things to consider as a restaurant owner

Business interruption

Depending on where your restaurant is located, it could take a significant amount of time to rebuild in the event of an accident that destroys the building, such as a serious fire. We recommend a minimum of 24-36 months of business interruption cover to make sure you're not out of pocket during the often lengthy rebuilding process.

Frying range conditions

If you're serving hot food, you will be required to keep your cooking equipment in a certain condition. When you take out your policy it is worth checking these conditions either with an advisor or at least when you get hold of your policy documents. So long as you comply with these, the maintenance of your cooking equipment won't be called into question in the event of a claim.

Legal cover

We can provide cover for expenses incurred by one of your guests taking legal action against you for food poisoning. Sooner or later, one of your diners will link a completely unrelated illness with what they've eaten at your restaurant the night before and could take you to court over it, resulting in a costly lawsuit regardless of the case's merit.

Contents

Your restaurant will be filled with expensive culinary implements, ingredients and furniture that you will want to make sure is protected from damage or theft.

Café owners

Cafés can vary from no nonsense railway station breakfast bars through to trendy artisan coffee shops, so it is only right that the insurance policies supporting them are just as varied.

YOUR Insurance can provide public liability insurance and employers’ liability insurance along with as many special features as you require for your café, making sure your specific needs are catered to.

Things to consider as a café owner

Glass

It is likely that you will be based on a high-street or otherwise paved area, so you might want to consider putting cover in place for your front windows. Replacing a store window is not only an awkward process, but getting a fitter to come out on an emergency basis can be as expensive as it is necessary. Filling in that gaping hole into your business needs to happen as soon as it possibly can and our policies can help you pay for that eventuality.

Business interruption

Although rarely quite such a gargantuan task as rebuilding a pub or a restaurant, rebuilding a café can still be a large project and recovering from a serious incident like a fire could take you out of business for a significant period of time. This is further hampered if your café is on a hard-to-reach stretch part of town, making it difficult to deliver building materials to, or if you work out of a listed building.

Which elements of pub and restaurant insurance are important to your business?

When buying a pub and restaurant insurance policy, you should consider the following elements which could make up the cover.

Public liability insurance

Public Liability Insurance

Public liability covers incidents including guests tripping and hurting themselves whilst at your pub or restaurant. This is highly recommended considering your regular interaction with the public.

Employers' liability

Employers Liability Insurance

If you employ people who aren’t direct family members and your business is a limited company, legally you have to have this in place.

You could be fined up to £1,000 a day if you don’t!

Business interruption

Fire

If something were to happen to your pub or restaurant, such as a fire or flooding, how long could you survive without being open for business? We recommend a minimum of 24-36 months of business interruption for pubs and restaurants.

Licence cover

Licence cover

Trying to run a pub or restaurant without an alcohol license is nigh on impossible and getting one reinstated after it is taken away from you can be a lengthy and costly process. We can help cover the costs with this additional cover.

Business contents

Business contents

What impact would a theft have on your day-to-day operations? Make sure you think through the value of your contents and let us know to make sure it is covered.

Money

If you keep cash on the premises, then this needs to be covered as well.

Case study

Eric is the landlord of the Hope & Anchor, a picturesque country pub that is based in an old converted wharf house on the banks of the River Thames. It dates back to the late 1800s and is a listed building.

After an accident in late February involving a couple of locals and an open fireplace, the pub suffers extensive fire damage and needs to be closed down for repairs.

Eric has a Public Liability policy in place that covers the injuries sustained by his worse-for-wears regulars and has some additional cover that deals with the costs associated with repairing the interior of the building. Unfortunately, the pub’s more lucrative summer season is now fast approaching and Eric is unable to open his business to the public again as it is taking much longer to make the repairs than he expected.

Despite the fire not completely destroying the pub, because of its listed status, repair work needs to go through a lengthy approval process and is taking significantly longer than he imagined it would. Sourcing the right kind of building materials to repair some of the wooden beams caught by the fire is also proving to be more complicated than anticipated. Eric could have avoided this scenario by adding business interruption cover to his pub insurance policy.

Conclusion

Several pubs and restaurants operate out of listed buildings and can be taken out of action for much longer than many landlords imagine, following unavoidable natural or man-made disasters. It is important to review your insurance arrangements and make sure this couldn’t happen to you.

Things to look out for

To make sure that you get the most from your insurance, you need to bear these things in mind when choosing your policy and running your business:

Average clause
This is applied by insurers in the event of a loss where the insured items have not been insured for the full value.

Minimum security standards
All policies have a minimum security standard. Criteria include protecting all ground floor or accessible windows with window locks and ensuring that the final entry/exit door is of solid construction and protected by a 5 lever mortice deadlock.

Frying range conditions
If you run a business that cooks and serves hot food, your policy will include frying/cooking range conditions. This will stipulate that you maintain ducts, hoods, extractors and fans to high standards of cleanliness. It is very important that you comply with your frying range conditions so that, in the event of a kitchen fire, the maintenance of your cooking equipment will not be called into question.

Theft by violent or forcible entry
When a loss occurs due to theft it is usually a condition of the policy that entry was gained to the premises through violent or forcible entry. For example, if a burglar gains access to your premises by breaking a window you would be covered by your insurance, whereas if they simply walked through an open door you would not.
