Property damage is top small business claim for 2012

smashed windowYOUR Insurance is urging small business employees and trades people to take care when on third-party premises after finding property damage caused by poor workmanship was its top claim for 2012*.

The top five property damage claims were;

  • Escape of water
  • Spillages and dropped tools on carpets, flooring, turf, furniture and work surfaces
  • Nails through pipes, severed gas mains and electric cables
  • Smashed windows and televisions
  • Cracked bathroom fixtures and fittings

Public Liability insurance covers third-party property damage and although not compulsory, YOUR insurance says it’s likely to receive 13 times** more claims for this, than the mandatory Employers Liability cover.

YOUR Insurance Marketing Manager, Annie Plaskett, comments: “Carelessness appears to be behind the majority of these claims, and although this is not indicative of all small businesses and trades people, it is a worrying trend. We also saw cases of damaged vehicles, fires caused by faulty workmanship and even a run-over dog. Most bizarre was damage caused by a tradesman’s cat.”
