Safety with office liability insurance

11 Jan 2010

It might seem as though it must be one of the safest and uneventful of environments in which to work. The office, however, presents its own range of dangers and potential accidents just waiting to happen. So much so, in fact, that if your business is office-based, then office liability insurance could prove a very wise, yet reasonably priced, investment. Without it, you could be facing the sort of claims capable of seeing your hard-earned business go under. So, just what kinds of liability does the seemingly safe and secure office-based business possess?
  • Public liability - top of the list should probably come the need for public liability insurance. Members of the public, your clients and customers can suffer accidents or have their property damaged even in the apparently safe environment of your office. A loose carpet or trailing electrical cord, for example, could trip up a customer who successfully holds you liable. Depending on the seriousness of any injuries sustained, of course, the claim for damages could easily reach figures higher than your business can afford - unless you hold sufficient office liability insurance.

Many office-based businesses, of course, are run from home. Here, public liability cover is still an important element of business insurance, so don't neglect to get yourself covered.

At Your Insurance Group, all our office insurance policies offer public liability insurance up to £2m as standard, meaning one less thing to worry about.

  • Employers' liability - if you have employees, then in most cases you will be required by law to hold a minimum of £5 million cover against claims for any injuries they sustain or illnesses they contract as a result of working for you. This requirement is, of course, unlikely to apply if yours is a home-based office and the only help you enjoy is that of an employed, immediate member of your family; unless your company is a registered limited company. • Professional liability - the office is naturally the home for many businesses relying on the provision of professional services and advice. The professional nature of the services offered, however, exposes businesses to their own set of liabilities - with respect to the standards expected of such a professionally-qualified individual and the costliness of mistakes, errors or negligence. The inclusion of professional liability cover, therefore, is a common feature of office liability insurance.
