Office insurance - liability cover
28 Oct 2009
Most small to medium sized companies regard the office as a fairly safe environment. While one would usually understand that a factory floor involved in heavy industry might be dangerous, the risks associated with the office and the need for office insurance may seem less apparent.
In fact, it can be remarkably easy to encounter problems and claims for compensation in even the most modest office.
These problems usually break down into two categories - the public and your employees.
The Public
Sadly, people can be accident-prone. The person that slips on your over-polished stairs; injures their back due to a collapsing chair; or who cuts themselves badly on a jagged piece of metal projecting from a broken desk, may well look to you for compensation. It's worth remembering that this is not just your customers - people delivering goods and supplies to you or just calling in to ask for directions, could all be 'risks' to you in this important area.
The insurance that offers to protect you from the financial costs of such claims is called public liability insurance and is at the core of all our business insurance packages as a standard feature.
Employees
For any employer, the risks arising from staff claims can be significant. Office insurance for injuries to staff incurred in the legitimate pursuit of their duties is usually mandatory by law in most situations and should not be overlooked.
The situations where problems could arise are many and varied. The employee that injures their shoulder carrying a PC from one desk to another, one that is attacked by a member of the public while conducting your business or another that is injured by a falling box of files, may all well turn to you for recompense. The awards made by tribunals and courts to employees injured in their work can be very high indeed and few such bodies will have any sympathy with the employer that claims "it was just one of those things".
The cover that offers you protection against this type of claim is usually called employers' liability insurance.
